Apartment 24: A Serene and Contemporary Transformation

Residential Space with Seventies Nostalgia

Inspiration for the used finishing materials was drawn from the history of the dwelling itself and was all about Seventies nostalgia: walnut veneer, white oiled marine birch plywood and white cement terrazzo created "in situ", evoke altogether atmosphere of that time. These three materials, together with natural light that has its strong presence during the whole day, enabled the Architect to achieve a serene, contemplative mood in the contemporary space.

Apartment 24, designed by Ivana Lukovic, is a remarkable transformation of a postwar Yugoslav modern residential architecture dwelling from the 1970s. Situated in central Belgrade, this space has been given a new lease on life through a thorough reconstruction approach. The result is a unique and inviting residential space that seamlessly blends the past with the present.

The overall transparency of the space and the appropriate height of the upper level are achieved through the introduction of a brand new metal construction. This innovative approach increases the habitable surface from 97m2 to 110m2. Additionally, eleven light wells and two double-height transitional spaces have been created, adding distinct areas with greenery and allowing natural light to flood the space from above. These design elements enhance the beauty of the implemented materials and create a serene and contemplative atmosphere.

All wooden elements in Apartment 24 were designed by Ivana Lukovic and produced in a joinery workshop in Athens, Greece. They were then transported to the site for assembly. The white cement terrazzo, another key feature of the design, was created by local craftsmen on-site. It was applied on the floor in front of the main entrance, as a dialogue with the Seventies staircase, as well as on both bathroom floors, the dining area, balcony, greenery pots, and washing basin for the upper-level bathroom. This meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship adds to the uniqueness of the space.

Apartment 24 also boasts impressive technical specifications. The introduction of the metal construction, attached to concrete columns and perimeter walls, creates a new construction system that not only increases the habitable space but also ensures structural integrity. The roof, facade windows, and balcony doors are triple glazed, providing excellent insulation and energy efficiency. Halogen-free cables and wires are used throughout the space, prioritizing fire safety. The city heating system, running on natural gas with high-quality radiators, ensures both technical and aesthetic value.

Throughout the design process, Ivana Lukovic played the dual role of client and architect. The transformation of this space, which used to belong to her late parents, was a way to deal with their departure and create something contemporary, functional, and beautiful. The project inspired all those involved, creating an enthusiastic atmosphere on-site. The completed space is now a sustainable retreat that engages all the senses and brings serenity to its users and visitors.

The reconstruction of Apartment 24 took place in Belgrade, Serbia, starting in May 2017 and finishing in September 2018. This project was not only about architectural qualities but also about social connections. It brought together professionals from various construction fields and several countries, all driven by their enthusiasm, international expertise, and human qualities. The result is a design that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant.

Apartment 24 has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2020 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Apartment 24 stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
